Who, Where and When
Mountain Creek Farm is the family farm of; Michael, Elizabeth, Katina and Briana Croft.
The farm is located on the foothills of the Brindabella Mountains approximately 20 minutes west of Canberra. We back and side Brindabella National Park which provides us with wonderful bio-security. We have our own clean watershed area and catchment, with several springs found on the farm.
For those with Google Earth we can be found at 35 degrees 12' 18.57" S, 148 degrees 53' 55.26 E. Eleveation ranges from 620 metres at the front gate, to 840 metres at the rear bondary. No need to join a gym, just a walk to the back gate once a day would keep anyone in shape.
Our farm is quite small by the surrounding district standards. The home farm is approximately 200 acres and it is here that we run the mixed farming enterprise. We lease the adjoining Travelling Stock Reserve which is another 50 acres or so. In addition to this we have agistment arrangements with two of our lovely neighbours, this adds approximately 1,200 acres to our grazing areas. So we farm around 1,450 acres all up.
The home farm and Travelling Stock Reserve have been treated with the biodynamic preparations since 2002. The neighbours' properties, where we agist stock, are 'organic by neglect'. This means nothing 'chemical' has been done to them since 2001 that we know of. We commenced spraying out the biodynamic preps on the neighbours' areas in 2006.
Our farm is a wonderful poly-culture of amazing bio-diversity which we are improving with a holistic management focus and biodynamics. We are protecting our wet areas by fencing and controlling grazing pressure, and enhancing wildlife habitats. We have planted 25,000 trees since 2003, a mixture of native and introduced species and will continue to plant many more.
The farm is our life long learning project which we started in 2001. We currently produce beef, pork, lamb, eggs and honey, but believe in the mixed farm concept, so many new enterprises will be added. So as they say, "watch this space".
